8-Day Kilimanjaro Climb: Lemosho Route

Safari Overview

The Lemosho Route is widely considered the most beautiful path up Kilimanjaro. Starting from the remote western slopes, it traverses the full ridge of the mountain, offering the most varied and spectacular scenery of any route. The longer approach delivers excellent acclimatization.

Day-to-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,750m)

Transfer from Arusha to Londorossi Gate on the remote western side. Begin trekking through pristine rainforest rarely seen on other routes. 3-4 hours to Mti Mkubwa camp.

Day 2

Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp (3,500m)

Leave the rainforest and emerge onto the open Shira Plateau — an ancient collapsed volcanic caldera now covered in heather. 6-7 hours of stunning high-altitude walking.

Day 3

Shira 1 to Shira 2 Camp (3,840m)

Cross the Shira Plateau with sweeping views of the Shira Cathedral rock formation and Kibo cone. 4-5 hours. Afternoon rest and acclimatization.

Day 4

Shira 2 to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower (4,630m)

Acclimatization day — climb to Lava Tower (4,630m) above the clouds, then descend to Barranco Camp (3,960m). First views of the massive Southern Ice Fields.

Day 5

The Barranco Wall scramble — dramatic hands-and-feet climbing above the clouds. Extraordinary views back to the Shira Plateau and western Tanzania.

Final acclimatization trek to the summit launch pad. Arrive midday, rest, eat well, hydrate, and sleep early for the midnight departure.
